Artist Statement
My early experiences with Japanese calligraphy, which I learned from my father and grandfather—one of the most significant figures of Japan’s avant-garde calligraphy—laid the foundation for my understanding of line and movement.
During my studies at the Berlin Weißensee school of Art, in the “Drawing Laboratory” of Professor Hanns Schimansky, I experimented with different perspectives, materials, and techniques, through which I developed my own drawing style.
This approach combines the precision and dynamism of calligraphy with the expressive possibilities of contemporary drawing.
Between writing and drawing, between East and West—this is the field of tension in which I have been working for many years.
My drawings arise from a quiet, meditative gesture. Each line is drawn carefully by hand—in a repetitive, time-intensive process.
The lines condense, then dissolve toward the white edge, creating an atmosphere of spaciousness and stillness—like endlessly falling snow.
I wish to offer viewers a space for free association, while at the same time drawing attention to the depth inherent in the act of drawing itself.
In a fast-paced, digital world, I consciously embrace the power of the handmade and the mindset contained within it.
